Volunteer Spotlight: Chinell Singletary

Chinell Singletary graduated from the University of South Carolina in 2004 with a bachelor’s degree in elementary education and a cognate in social work. She later received a master’s degree in higher education administration from Columbia College in 2015.  Chinell is an Undergraduate Academic Advisor at UofSC’ s College of Information and Communications.

While at South Carolina, Chinell was actively involved in the American Association of African American Students (AAAS), Multicultural Assistance Peer Program (MAPP), Carolina Productions and Student Government -Parking Committee.

Chinell never thought she would return to UofSC to work, but while working as a school counselor for two years, she felt like something was missing in her career.

After working in education, customer service, retail, and state government, Chinell felt the most fulfilled when she job shadowed a Career Development Coach at the U-of-SC’s Career Center.

“While I was helping students with their resumes and gave them career advice, I found the missing piece, she said. “I missed working with students and I wanted to give back at my alma mater.  I came back home.”

When asked what her favorite part of being a member of the University of South Carolina Alumni Association and the Black Alumni Council, Chinell explained, “engaging with like-minded gamechangers to advocate on behalf of all black alumni, students, faculty, and staff.”

This engagement involves; creating events and programs; while fulfilling the legacy of Richard T. Greener,  by providing scholarships for students to receive a quality education from South Carolina.

“I love South Carolina; I love helping my students reach their fullest potential, and I want to be one of the game changers for continuing to make South Carolina a better place to obtain an education and work, Chinell said.”

Chinell will become Chair of the Black Alumni Council for the 2020-2021 year.
