Volunteer Leader Spotlight: Ozell Newman
“There is an aura of excitement floating in the air with the compatible dynamics of a strong, committed leadership team representing South Carolina alumni in Horry County,” Newman says.
Newman has specific goals for the club in supporting the Alumni Association’s mission to engage alumni, support students and build the South Carolina brand. “I am constantly seeking to increase awareness about the club within the city, expand our active alumni membership base and grow alumni engagement and camaraderie,” he says.
Newman goes on to say that, “As a life-long Gamecock fan and a two-time graduate of South Carolina, it does not take much to motivate me to be involved for my alma mater.” Once he assessed his schedule and saw he had time to commit, he dove right in to lead the club because, as he states, “Having a positive attitude and outlook on the possibilities of a thriving alumni club made me that much more willing to accept the challenges and get all of the moving pieces in motion to propel the club forward.”
Ozell’s time as a student at South Carolina molded him into the leader he is today. “I was fortunate to take advantage of opportunities to develop essential leadership skills such as spending several semesters in Air Force R.O.T.C., volunteering as a M.A.P.P. (Minority Assistance Peer Program) counselor, Resident Mentor, as well serving as Chapter President while a member of the Theta Nu Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.,” he says.
The most important life skill he obtained from South Carolina was with overcoming shyness and developing interpersonal skills. He attributes this development to staying on-campus for the entire duration as a student to build relationships with fellow classmates. That experience translates well as Ozell builds relationships with alumni in Horry County to strengthen the Gamecock alumni network.
When it comes to supporting his alma mater, Ozell is a life member of the Alumni Association and says, “Being a member gives me a sense of pride and accomplishment while also staying connected to my alma mater. Membership in the Alumni Association to me is figuratively a priceless understatement to the popular saying, ‘Student for a short time, Gamecock for a lifetime’.”
