LGBTQ+ Alumni Council Creates Endowed Scholarship

Through the month of June, the LGBTQ+ Alumni Council has been working to recognize and reward students who are contributing to a more inclusive and welcoming University of South Carolina through the creation of a scholarship fund.

This is the first LGBTQ+ endowment scholarship in the University or Alumni Association’s history.

With 16% of students identifying as members of the community and the numbers of allies and advocates continuing to grow, council chair Joe Wright said this is the perfect time to start this movement.

“As proud members of the Gamecock family, we understand the importance of creating an inclusive and welcoming environment for all students at our beloved alma mater,” Wright said in a letter to alumni on June 5. “As alumni, we have a unique opportunity to play a powerful role in providing the necessary resources and support to these student leaders who are driving positive change on campus. By contributing to the LGBTQ+ scholarship fund, we can celebrate our pride for USC and the LGBTQ+ community while directly impacting the lives of deserving students.”

In the first two weeks, the fund raised over $3,500 of its $5,000 goal for the month of June. Those who give certain amounts can receive Gamecock pride gear including pens, stickers, sunglasses, and an exclusive pride t-shirt. Recurring gifts can also be made on a monthly, quarterly, or annual basis.

“Your contribution will help pave the way for a more inclusive future at Carolina, ensuring that LGBTQ+ student leaders have the resources and support they need to effect change and leave their mark on our university,” Wright said.
