Gamecock Sports Preview 2021

It may be summer, but we are already looking forward to kicking off a new academic year with our annual Gamecock Sports Preview Thursday, August 19 from 6-8 p.m. at the Pastides Alumni Center. This members-only event includes dinner, beer and wine, and the opportunity to mingle with fellow fans.

Gamecock Sports Preview 2019 brought together nearly 300 alumni and fans to socialize and hear about what’s ahead for South Carolina athletics. Nearly two years later, we’re excited to bring back this tradition.


Ray Tanner | Athletics Director 

University of South Carolina Athletics Director Ray Tanner is in his ninth year guiding the Gamecocks’ athletics programs. After a long and highly successful career as Carolina’s baseball coach, Tanner officially began his new duties on Aug. 2, 2012.  Under Tanner’s watch, Gamecock student-athletes have achieved tremendous success in intercollegiate athletic competition, in the classroom and in the community.

Kalen Anderson | Head Coach, Gamecock Women’s Golf

Kalen Anderson enters her 14th year as the head coach of the South Carolina women’s golf team in 2020-21 on the heels of eight NCAA Championship appearances in the past 10 championships and five NCAA Regional titles since 2010.

South Carolina tabbed Anderson to mentor its program in January 2008. She joined the Gamecocks after two years as an assistant at Duke, where she had an All-American career as a player, and a four-year stint as a professional on the FUTURES Tour. Her philosophy on coaching has led to immediate success for the Carolina program.

Shane Beamer | Head Coach, Gamecock Football

Shane Beamer, considered to be one of the rising stars among coaches in college football, was named the University of South Carolina’s 36th head football coach in December 2020. Beamer, 43, has been an assistant coach at seven Football Bowl Subdivision schools for 21 seasons. During his career, he has coached in 17 bowl games, including a College Football Playoff National Championship Game, has posted 18 non-losing seasons, six of those with double-digit victories and his teams have won 62.5 percent of its games.

Mark Kingston | Head Coach, Gamecock Baseball 

Mark Kingston was named the head baseball coach at the University of South Carolina in June 2017. He became the 30th head coach in the history of Gamecock Baseball.Kingston came to Carolina following a three-year stint as the head coach at USF. He compiled a 100-78-1 record while in Tampa, helping the Bulls to a pair of NCAA Regional appearances. Kingston owns a career mark of 253-180-1 in eight seasons as a head coach, including five at Illinois State, with three NCAA appearances in that eight-year span.

Frank Martin | Head Coach, Gamecock Men’s Basketball

Frank Martin was named the head men’s basketball coach at the University of South Carolina in March 2012, becoming the 32nd head coach in the history of the South Carolina program. Martin owns a 264-173 (.604) overall record as a head coach, entering his 14th season overall, and a 147-119 (.552) record entering his ninth season at South Carolina.Martin was named the 2017 Jim Phelan National Coach of the Year after leading the Gamecocks to the best season in school history during the 2016-17 campaign, as the squad advanced to the program’s first Final Four and recorded a school record 26 wins.

Dr. Timothy Malone | Psychiatrist and Director of Athletics Mental Health

Dr. Timothy Malone is a psychiatrist with specialties in child and adolescent psychiatry, general adult psychiatry, forensic psychiatry, and addiction medicine. He is a clinical professor for the USC School of Medicine in Department of Neuropsychiatry and has spent more than 16 years working with student-athletes in every facet of mental health and behavioral issues.

Connor Shaw | Director of Football Relations

Connor Shaw, University of South Carolina’s all-time winningest quarterback, was named Director of Football Relations in February.Shaw, the winningest quarterback in school history, returned to the Carolina football program in January of 2020 as Director of Player Development. In that role, he focused on the student-athlete’s career development, mental health, financial literacy and life skills, while leading the “Beyond Football” program.
